In the last two decades, Bangladesh’s hotel industry has made great progress. Especially in the international arena, the hospitality and tourism of Bangladesh has been able to reach a unique high level. Md Shakawath Hossain, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Unique Hotels and Resorts PLC, is one of those who are leading this industry. His reputation and efficiency are also appreciated in the international arena. That is why Md Shakawath Hossain has been elected as the vice-president of the local committee of Bangladesh International Hotel Association (BIHA). He is the first Bangladeshi to be selected for this post considering his outstanding contribution and leadership role to the hospitality industry.
Md Shakawath Hossain, a highly energetic and tenacious executive in terms of professionalism, is a leading figure in the hospitality and tourism industry of Bangladesh, having held several key senior positions in Marriott International and Starwood Hotels & Resorts and has over 20 years of experience in this field.
He was appointed as the youngest Resident Manager by Marriott International for Westin Dhaka, one of the international standard hotels in the country and also served as General Manager. The hotel has won several international and local awards from 2017 to 2019 under his efficient management. He has earned success wherever he has been assigned. Through sincere work and development thinking, he has already gained wide appreciation and reputation in the hotel industry sector of the country, which is quite talked about outside the country as well.
He has been able to highlight the fact that the hotel industry of Bangladesh has gained wide recognition in the international hotel industry arena, and that Bangladesh is a country of hospitality. Once, Bangladeshis were not taken to the highest executive positions in international hotels in Bangladesh, as it was thought that they could not perform the duties competently. Md Shakawath Hossain, an efficient executive of the hotel industry, has changed that idea. He has proved through his work that a Bangladeshi can lead the international hotel industry skillfully. He has received numerous recognitions and awards for being a diligent professional and achieving excellence in work. He received the ‘Asian Curry Award 2021’ for his influential contribution, influence and leadership to the industry. This has taken Bangladesh to the top position in this industry. He was recently recognized as a Bright Alumni of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management of University of Dhaka (DU). Being meritorious from childhood, Md Shakawath Hossain completed his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and Masters in Tourism and Hospitality Management (M.Phil) from University of Dhaka (DU). Md Shakawath Hossain, an efficient and experienced executive of the hotel industry, thinks, “The evaluation of the hotel and tourism sector in the international field is high. The level of development of a country is determined by foreigners by looking at the number of international standard star brand hotels in that country. Especially foreign entrepreneurs and tourists first inquire about the quality of hotel management in the respective countries. In that direction, Bangladesh has been able to move forward in the past years. Bangladesh is now self-sufficient in international standard hotel industry. Highly educated young men and women of the country are now interested in joining this industry.”
He feels that there is a need to establish a high quality or an international quality hotel and tourism institute in the country. Many boys and girls of Bangladesh will get employment opportunities in different hotels or resorts abroad through this.
